Located on the Italian Eastern Riviera, Riccione is a municipality in the province of Rimini, in Emilia-Romagna, and is hosting the last European Open this weekend.
With the world championships fast approaching, a number of judokas are traveling to Italy to compete in the European Open in Riccione. Four members of the GB Judo team heading to Tashkent next month will be in action alongside several Commonwealth medalists.
Day one will see the two-time world championship medalist Nekoda Smythe-Davis (Jo Crowley; Ealing JC) continue his return to competition. Smythe-Davis returned to competition last weekend with a 5eplace at the Oberwart European Open, competing in the -63kg weight class, but will compete in its more familiar weight class (-57kg) this weekend.
In the -66kg category, Finlay Allan (Luke Preston; Camberley JC) picked up a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games last month when he was a bronze medalist in -48kg Amy Platten (Guy Platten; Redbridge JC) compete after her 7e place at last weekend’s Oberwart European Open. Eric Ham (Geoff Ham; Glossop JC)who missed the bronze to his teammate Daniel Powell in Oberwart, returns to compete in the -73kg class while Powell will compete on Day 2 in the -81kg class alongside the Commonwealth Champion Lachlan Moorhead (Matt Moorhead; Sheffield JC).
There will be two more Commonwealth Champions in action on day two as Jamal Petgrave (Andy Ede; Westcroft) and Emma Reid (Steve Sandy; Redbridge JC) are in action respectively in the -90kg and -78kg categories. Reid is one of the judokas who will compete at the World Championships alongside -70kg fighters and Commonwealth bronze medalists Kelly Petersen-Pollard (Fitzroy Davis; Hardy Spicer 83) and Jemima Yeats-Brown (Ian Oliver; Ryecroft Judokwai).
Commonwealth Games Bronze Medalists Rhys Thompson (George Hyslop; Enfield JC) and Rachel Tytler (Brian Long; ProJudo) compete respectively in the -100kg and -78kg categories.
by Tytler other Scottish Commonwealth Games representatives Dylan Munro (Billy Cusack; Edinburgh JC) and Alexander Short (Cusack; Edinburgh JC) will compete on the opening day in the -60 and -66 kg categories respectively.
Referees Martin and Lisa Rivers were also selected to represent GB Judo in Riccione.

Preliminary round action kicks off at 8:00 a.m. on both Saturday 10e and Sunday 11e with the final block to follow around 4:00 p.m. (times subject to change)
