Andrew McCarthy’s tweet last night will give you giggles and nostalgia. It helps the women of HBO revival Sex and the city, photoshoping himself and Kim Cattrall in his’ 80s classic model form Mannequin, Jokingly, “I thought they would never call.”
The comments are hilarious. They show love for McCarthy, SATC, Kim Cattrall and the beloved Mannequin. If you don’t understand the joke, Mannequinis a quintessential ’80s comedy that could only have been adopted by viewers of its time. The ’80s recipe comes with Malls, Andrew McCarthy, James Spader, Estelle Getty, Meshach Taylor, makeover montages, even a theme song, âNothing’s Gonna Stop Us Nowâ by Jefferson Starship.
MGM’s official dynopsis puts it this way: The unlucky artist Jonathan Switcher (Andrew McCarthy) bounces from one dead end job to another, never managing to hang on to any of them. But everything changes when he builds a mannequin, which he falls in love with. It’s the first thing he did that made him feel like a real artist. To his surprise, Jonathan discovers the model prominently in the window of the Prince and Company department store. When he saves the life of an old lady who happens to be the owner of this store, he is rewarded by getting a job at the store as a stockist.
The model later comes to life as Ema ‘Emmy’ Hesire, (Kim cattrall) who was an ancient Egyptian princess living in 2514 BC. Gorgeous and vivacious, this femme fatale helps Jonathan turn his career around, inspiring him to become the best window dresser in town. But Emmy soon discovers that the real world isn’t very expensive, when they run into competitors who want them to shut down – for good.
And if you can’t get enough of wacky director Michael Gottlieb’s perfect ’80s creations, you’re in for a treat. He wrote and directed Mr. Nanny starring Hulk Hogan as a former professional wrestler who shows off his acting skills as a bodyguard / nanny for a few bratty kids whose inventing father is being hunted down by a rival. Even David Johansen, of New York Dolls fame, plays the villain. You know aka Buster Poindexter who played The Ghost of Christmas Spent in Shaved. Go!
And if you STILL need more Mannequin in Your Life, one of the original ‘Emmy’ mannequins used in the filming of the film has been restored by South Fellini and is currently on display in their store, located in the Fashion District in downtown Philadelphia (the head / the torso are the original parts). Andrew McCarthy, you really brought it in with your photoshop skills and an understudy last night. You might just have earned some well-deserved royalties from (kissing my fingertips as a chef) the silly, nostalgic romantic comedy we saw on HBO a million times as kids. Now I have “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” stuck in my head. My favorite way to listen to this song is through the Skeleton twins lip sync You can tape your camera so that no one can watch you get off.
Fans got a first glimpse of And Just Like That⦠ahead of the weekend, with three of the four main protagonists returning. The Revival series is slated to debut on HBO Max later this year.
