Xitang East Zone under construction is the eastern extension of Xitang Old Town, comprising nearly 100,000 square meters of tourist shops, hotels, visitor centers and cultural facilities. When completed, it will become a new entrance to the northeast of the old town. The eastern area of ââXitang is divided by a river into two phases. As a key point of phase â ¡, building 1 is located at the southwest corner of the north site, facing the river on the west and south sides to overlook the old town and adjoining the commercial blocks of phase â of the other side of the river.
Xitang Old Town has strict town planning requirements for new buildings in the Scenic Area. In addition to the height limit, the sloping roof, small blue-black tiles, black-white and gray tones, and wood color are all design prerequisites. What type of program should be planned in the central area of ââthe eastern waterfront? What type of shape should be used to meet the needs of the function and establish its benchmark while respecting the requirements of the urban landscape? It is the answer to these challenges that dominates the entire design process.
The basic urban fabric of the pedestrian streets in the East Zone is the commercial courtyard on the ground and first floors and the gabled-roofed hotel courtyard on the second floor. In addition to this “base color” are the special landmarks scattered around the area, such as the tourist center in the center, the Nijigen Activity Hall on the northeast corner and the Naera Boutique Hotel Phaseâ ¡ on the northwest corner. . As one of these landmarks, Building One should especially attract people to stay and participate in long-term activities, thus forming an agglomeration effect and becoming the highlight of the tourist experience in any one. the eastern zone. After extensive studies and discussions, a mixed market and art gallery function became the consensus of the client and the design team to create an open and fluid market space on the first floor to accommodate the market. from the organic farm, creative bookstore, boutique cafe, restaurant and hotel reception while creating a multifunctional art gallery on the second floor to host exhibitions, forums and cocktails.
We translated the program and the rules of style into the design commitment of space and the image, which became the basis of the tectonic system. In keeping with the obvious difference between the upper and lower storey programs, we continued the stacking pattern of the frame and gable roof structure used in the pedestrian street, but reversed it upside down with the gable roof structure at the bottom in order to acquire particularity with coordination.
The overhanging Chinese gable roof supported by the white gable wall is a type of traditional residential form in the southern Yangtze River Delta, and a single roof can be continuously replicated to cover a larger area. We extracted the structural shape of the Y-columns from the geometry of the continuous gable wall to support the inverted triangular truss roof, forming a linear unit with a width of 6.3 meters and a length of almost 52 meters. The space in the farm is used to install the MEP equipment, and a continuous corrugated interior space is formed under the farm. 6 linear units are connected in parallel to form the roof covering the ground floor market, echoing the old settlements of the city continuously. The freely distributed Y-shaped columns ensure an open and fluid space for the market, making a shareable and flexible space possible for diverse functions. At the east and west ends, some of the Y-shaped columns are replaced by V-shaped gable walls with diagonal bracing inside, which resolve the seismic force and establish a connection with the traditional reverse-pitched gable walls.
The art gallery is in the market, and if we had continued to use the language of gable roofs and housing units, we would easily achieve a harmony of style, but then it would be difficult to provide the identity of necessary landmark and large interior space. Therefore, we tried to build a unique and relatively abstract shape to house a space without columns. The link with tradition is no longer limited to the figurative form, but is inspired by wood craftsmanship to pursue a more complete iconicity. In the end, we extracted the supporting structure of the Xitang handcrafted lantern.
The large roof is approximately 30 meters long and 20 meters wide. 92 short glued laminated timber beams intersect and lean on each other to form a slightly arched shell, which makes the long span structure more reasonable and solves the roof drainage with its slope simultaneously. The weight of the wooden roof is transferred to the surrounding wooden pillars through a horizontal steel frame ring. The group of columns is composed of oblique X-shaped columns three-dimensionally composed by interposed glulam columns. Providing continuous supports in vertical and horizontal dimensions, this group of columns has strong resistance to lateral force. It not only supports the horizontal thrust of the arched roof beams and enables slim column size with a section of 160X160mm, but also provides lateral strength for the glass curtain wall on the inner side of the column.
On the second floor, we concentrate the staircase, elevator, large lifting platform and other equipment in a long box on the north side of the gallery to keep the purity of the main space. The outwardly bent floor-to-ceiling curtain wall is made of semi-glazed glass with progressive fogging, and an adjustable membrane is placed under the diamond-shaped skylight on the roof to offer the art gallery soft natural light during the day, while the heat light can be diffused at night, making it a glamorous “super lantern” in the east district of Xitang.
