Hondermarck called up to Ireland U21 squad

Former Drogheda United midfielder William Hondermarck has been called up to the Republic of Ireland’s Under-21 squad for the European Championship qualifiers against Italy and Sweden.

The 20-year-old replaces injured Ryan Johansson in the squad, and the French-born player will join Jim Crawford’s side on Tuesday.

Ireland face Italy on Friday 12 November at Tallaght Stadium before Sweden is invited to the same venue the following Tuesday. Both matches will be broadcast live on RTÉ2 and RTÉ Player.

The Boys In Green are currently fourth in the group standings after two wins, one draw and one loss in the first four games against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Luxembourg and Montenegro.

Hondermarck currently plays for Barnsley where he has made five league appearances this season, winning his first start against Middlesbrough in October.

He was part of Drogheda’s squad for the 2018 season, before signing for Norwich City in January 2019. He joined Barnsley in September after being released by the Canaries following a loan spell at Harrogate Town at the end from last season.
