Masca del Tacco Susumaniello 2020
In “Native Wine Grapes of Italy”, author Ian D’Agata says that the name susumaniello means “to load the donkey”, a reference to the grape being “a very productive variety and nothing else”. Two researchers dedicated to the revitalization of traditional Apulian grape varieties found a single vineyard with a few susumaniello vines in the late 1990s. Now the plantings are multiplying and we have a few varietal bottlings. D’Agata says the pure “Susie” offers “solid but not massive texture”, “also lots of dark cherry and plum aromas and flavors”. For this Masca del Tacco wine, I would add a noticeable sweetness, as well as some chocolate notes. It’s fun and flavorful, more than just a varietal to cross off your bucket list. ABV: 14.5%. PC: 610 grams (average).
