Yorubaland’s Aare Ona Kankanfo, Gani Adams, alleged that the attack on the Oyo State Correctional Center was carried out by bandits.
Naija News had previously reported that the attackers stormed the facility around 10 p.m. on Friday evening carrying weapons and deploying grenades to access it.
According to reports, all prisoners at the facility were released even as guards monitoring inmates rushed to safety when the gunmen attacked.
During a visit to the establishment on Sunday, the Minister of the Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, noted 446 of the 907 escapees were recaptured while 69 never left the establishment.
But in a statement from his media collaborator, Kehinde AderemiAdams said the invasion of Oyo City Prison by bandits exposed the poor security situation in the country.
He added that the attack on the prison exposed the vulnerability of the prison facility and the security agencies guarding it.
Adams condemned the attack, saying Oyo State and the entire southwest had never seen such an attack for a very long time.
He said, âThe city of Oyo has never recorded such an incident in its long history. It is regrettable that the insecurity has triggered various types of threats.
âAfter the attack on the train bound for Abuja and the attack on Oyo prison, there is no doubt that the bandits are playing out a scenario that will later engulf the whole nation.
âIt is indeed very ridiculous to hear such unsavory news coming from the old city. However, I would like to express my concern to Kabiesi, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi and the Oyo State government.
âI also take this opportunity to urge the Inspector General of Police to review the security situation in Oyo and resolve the issue in the most professional manner. Oyo State is very sensitive to the southwest and we cannot continue to live in fear.
