Viva Italia: Rediscovering Retsof pepper | Lifestyles

October is National Italian-American Heritage Month, and the Livingston County Historian’s Office celebrates many contributions throughout the county, including the Retsof Pepper – a local heritage vegetable variety developed in Retsof, a hamlet of the city of York.

Many International Salt Company miners in Retsof resided in nearby company housing from the 1880s through the 1930s. Since many of the workers were Italian, the neighborhood became known as Little Italy.
