KOLKATA: Bengal Global Business Summit, to be held on April 20-21, could host big names from Indian Inc.
Besides Gautam Adani, who is expected to be at the top, officials said there would be other industry stalwarts at the event. Those names, as officials have indicated, could include Hindustan Unilever Managing Director and CEO and FICCI Chairman Sanjiv Mehta, Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla, SBI Chairman Dinesh Khara, CEO and Managing Director of Mahindra & Mahindra Anish Shah, Chairman of JSW Group Sajjan Jindal, Indian Metal & Ferro Alloy MD SK Panda, Chairman of ITC Sanjiv Puri, Chairman of TCG Group Purnendu Chatterjee, Chairman of Great Eastern Energy and former Chairman of FICCI YK Modi, Chairman of RP-SG Group Sanjiv Goenka, Chairman of Universal Success Prasoon Mukherjee and Chairman of Advenz Group Saroj Poddar among others.
This time, BGBS, the international summit meant to showcase Bengal’s investment potential, will have two business partners for the first time since its inception in 2015. Apex industry chambers FICCI and CII will partner with the Government of West Bengal in the sixth edition. For the first five editions of BGBS, only FICCI was a partner.
In addition, there will be four knowledge partners for the event. These are KPMG, PwC, E&Y and Crisil. Incidentally, BGBS is being held after a two-year hiatus. The last BGBS was held in February 2019. Big names like Mukesh Ambani, LN Mittal, Swaraj Paul, Pawan Munjal had attended different editions of BGBS before. Former President Pranab Mukherjee and former Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had also attended the summit in different editions.
This global industry event was due to be held in 2021 as it became a biennial affair in 2019 following the CM’s announcement that it would be held once every two years. At the last BGBS in 2019, there were 12 partner countries and more than 450 foreign delegates from 35 countries. In this edition, there will be 14 partner countries as well as 40 participating countries. The partner countries this time are Japan, UK, Germany, Italy, Australia, Bangladesh, Kenya, Malaysia, Norway and Finland among others.
One of the main outcomes of the last summit was the state-to-state partnerships signed with the regional province of Lombardy, Italy, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, the province of Jeollanam Do, the Republic of Korea and the Government of West Bengal for the mutual development of industry, infrastructure, education and skills development. Major multinationals like Alstom, Accor, DP World, IKEA, Capgemini, Decathlon, Schneider Electric, Oerlikon, Metro, Sharaf Group, IBM, Dell, BT, P&G were also present at the summit.
Former State Finance Minister Amit Mitra previously said that investment proposals worth Rs 12.3 lakh crore were received between 2015 and 2019 at BGBS and majority of them they were being implemented.
